ifconfig problem

ifconfig problem

hi all,

i am getting some error messages during bootup

ifconfig :<hostname> bad address

and some more messages related to it.

i some how checked the /etc/hostanem.hme0 /etc/hosts file.

entries in these files were proper.

if i am running the following command from root:

#ifconfig hme0 <ip address >

#ifconfig hme0 plumb

#ifconfig hme0 up

i am able to telnet to other machine.

so i feel that thier is no problem with hardware.

can any one suggest, what could be the problem...

thanks in advance...

insure that the information in /etc/hostname.hme0 is correct - if you put a hostname in that file, insure it is spelled the same as the entry in /etc/hosts.
(this means that if you put mysystem in /etc/hostsname.hme0 but have mysystem.mydomain.com - that isn't the same)
/etc/hostname.hme0 can have either ip or hostname. check the ip to insure accuracy. check entry in /etc/hosts - insure there is no tab or space at the end of the entry (it vi you can :l to see the line and insure the $ endofline is there where it should be)

check to insure that your network is available - maybe something else is hanging so the ifconfig can't plumb the interface but then it works later when you do it manually.
