creating a new ip address



i have two computers with barely a lan line connecting it... if a have a server program in one and communicate with the other with its ip alone?


how can i find the ip address of the computers ...? or can i create a ip address of my own to communicate...?

ok... do i need any network configuration for communicating... i have just connected it using a lan wire
if i just ping with the ip address can i get the results?

you have to assign ip address to any networking device before you can ping  its logical. yes you need to configure your interfaces so that they can communicate with each other, only wire will not work. i'll recommend you to get some basic networking knowledge thru google or any other search engine.
